Rocky Spencer Memorial Scholarship
T
he Rocky Spencer Memorial Scholarship was founded to honor the memory of the late Rocky Spencer. Rocky’s career as the large carnivore specialist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife came to a tragic end in a helicopter accident on September 8, 2007 while relocating bighorn sheep in the Yakima Canyon.Rocky Spencer had a love for animals. He initiated many programs within the Department of Fish and Wildlife, pioneering the use of Karelian bear dogs for bear and cougar programs, locating the first nesting loons in Washington and, ironically, starting the helicopter rescue program. Rocky was also a natural teacher.
With his warm heart, caring smile and easy laugh, he shared his
passion with a wide audience through presentations at schools and interviews
with the media. Nearly one thousand people attended his funeral. Rocky inspired
others to treat each animal with care and dignity. Established to continue
Rocky’s legacy, the Rocky Spencer Memorial Scholarship will provide students the
opportunity to fulfill their passion and promise to become wildlife stewards.
The Scholarship will be available to students pursuing degrees in wildlife
biology or a related field. A Scholarship Selection Committee will advise award
decisions.
